How do I attract a greater variety of birds to my bird feeders?

Posted by Filed Under Suet Bird Feeder with No Comments

I live in the Midwest and enjoy feeding the birds. I feed sunflower seeds, suet cakes, thistle, and sugar water. I also have a bird bath. I get a nice variety of cardinals, sparrows, chickadees, finches, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, and even an occasional duck — but is there something could offer to bring in rarer birds? Like Orioles? Bluebirds? Doves? More? I live near a creek, greenway and several large, heavily wooded parks.
Thanks — all your answers are great; I’ll give them a try. Unfortunately, I can’t leave a thumbs up — "Pollice verso" — for all of you as a "Level 1," but if I could, I would.

My neighbor removed my squirrel feeder and suet block feeder from the City Tree. Can I bill him for it?

My neighbor is a jack*ss and insists that all the animals that live near the house, which is across the street from a forest preserve, ONLY come on to the property because of my feeder. The feeder that has been up since January 7th.

‎"The feeder attracts skunks."

Oh… So you mean the 2 skunks that come by the house every 2 weeks and wake me up when they pass under my bedroom window predicted a year and a half ago that I’d put a feeder out?

8 raccoons, 2 opossums, 1 rabbit, 1 fox, a small herd of deer, 5 squirrels, a mated pair of cardinals, 1 bluejay, 4 woodpeckers, snakes, & 2 skunks that wake me up with their smell every 2 weeks from spring to fall are psychic & hung out here because of my feeder? Well I’ll be damned.

So anyways… We were told we needed to take them down after dark yesterday. That involves a screwdriver and I didn’t want to do it in the dark so I just went out there with a broom and shovel and cleaned up the shells and bits of corn that were on the ground. I could easily do this in the dark.

I wake up this morning and look out my window at 7:00am and both the suet feeder, that has been out there mess free for going on a year now, and my squirrel feeder are missing.

There is only one reason it would be missing, the jack*ss took it all down and threw it out.

The details of this are:
1. He is a tenant. He does not own the building. He lives here just like we do. He claims the landlord wanted it removed but we didn’t have a chance to speak to him yet.

2. He has a history of just throwing out anything he doesn’t like when you don’t ask HIS permission to put it out. He killed my flowers last summer when I replaced the dying flowers in the box by the front door.

3. The tree it was on is City of Chicago Property. It is on the other side of the sidewalk from the house so it is Public Property, not part of the property the house is on. He TREATS it like it is building property, but he works for the city and damn well knows better.

If he stole my property, I want to bill him for:

1. The squirrel feeder itself: .00
2. The feed in it: .00.
3. The Suet Feeder: .00.
4. The Suet: .00.

He had no right to touch my stuff when we just hadn’t had the chance to remove it ourselves yet.

Can I bill him for the theft of property?
