Suet Bird Feeder: All You Need To Know About Feeding Birds With Suet

Posted by Filed Under Featured, Suet Bird Feeder with No Comments

Suet is a great food for birds, especially during the winter time and when the birds are either migrating or nesting.  In fact, anytime birds need a high protein boost for energy, a suet bird feeder is a great help.

Suet can be purchased in many different shapes and sizes to fit many different size feeders.  But, it can also be made at home.

Suet comes from the fatty part around a the kidney area of a cow.  You can either use this, melted down or use store-purchased lard or shortening.  Melt it down and pour it into a mold.  The mold shape will depend on what type of feeder you have to hold it.

After pouring into the mold, you should add other ingredients such as bird seed, nuts raisins or cornmeal to give the birds some variety and a more balanced feed.  Let this cool and you have ready made food – and you can freeze any unused suet for later use.

As for the suet bird feeder, you can use many different objects.  You can put the suet mix into an old onion bag and hang it.  You can put it on pine cones, ice cream cones or just spread on tree branches around the garden.

If you opt for a store bought suet bird feeder there are also many choices that range from a few bucks to high priced, custom made bird houses with wire mesh holders ready to hold the suet.

Whichever option you take you will attract a lot of different species of birds such as woodpeckers (if you feeder has a tail support) chickadees, nuthatches, jays and finches.

Why arent the birds coming to our feeders?

Posted by Filed Under Suet Bird Feeder with 5 Comments

We have three different bird feeders outside our window. Last year we had one and tons of birds came. This year I added a suet type holder, a normal bird feeder, and a woodpecker treat log. So far only the woodpeckers come and they dont even come that often! What are we doing wrong this year? It has been atleast 3 weeks since we put the feeders out.
The yard has not been changed, no new neighbords, no new pets, and the feeders hang outside a 3rd floor window (same as last year when they came) so there is no furniture changes.
I know woodpeckers can be large, but these are the small kind, just slightly larger than your average finch.

I would like some really, really simple ways to make some suet cakes for my wild birds…
I found a few. recipes,.but, I also have some other questions regarding this as well…Can I put in uncooked rice or pasta in the mix? Can I use Crisco, instead of going to the butchers to get the beef tallow?
What other interesting things can I put into my suet cakes, what do people do to store them…as in where can I put the created "cakes", after I have let the stuff cool down..what do I pour them into? and should I put them into the frig’, or let them sit out in the kitchen or freeze them? I need to get them solid…that’s why I ask!

Thanks!!

A dull green bird with big red blotches on its face, throat, back, and tail, was at my suet feeder?

Posted by Filed Under Suet Bird Feeder with 1 Comment

This bird maybe 6-9 inches long, a dullish green all over, with big red blotches on the face, throat, and some on the back, etc. I don’t really think this bird is wild because it didn’t seem to know how to eat the suet…it looked more like some escaped pet bird. I have never seen one like it before, and I can’t find any photos online that match its description. Its call was a little like a chatter. Can anyone help me identify it, whether it was wild or domestic?
Oops – I live in lower Michigan.
Also, it has a short tail and a short, wide "crest" that it can slightly raise and lower on its head.

It is definitely not a parrot, as it is not a hookbill at all – its bill is more long and thin.
